Catchment Scale Sensing With United Utilities
Deployment Stats
Connected teams
Internal teams that can now operate within the same shared system rather than having to work up and then share data manually.
Daily in-water readings
Readings made by FreeUP hardware and transmitted to our cloud platform in real-time per day for this United Utilities deployment.
Daily out-of-water data points
Data captured, cleaned and incorporated into delivering water quality & quantity insights through our platform on a daily basis for this deployment.
Demo 1
Demonstration of reliable monitoring
We were selected to work with United Utilities following a successful previous pilot demonstrating that in-river measurements could be reliably achieved with our low-cost, low-form factor, briefcase sensing solution.
This enabled United Utilities to achieve real-time sensing capabilities without having to pour concrete or add mains power to remote river side locations.
It also removed the follow-on work of working up the information recorded by data loggers and other hardware, as our solution also included a smart dashboard that provided real-time insights beyond just displaying the raw data.
Live Full Scale Deployment - Demo 2
Insights at scale
In the current demonstration we are running, we deployed a far greater number of sensors catchment wide, so that the catchment could be better understood and predicted.
We deployed sensing during a flooding event and without prior physical inspection of the sites selected. Instead we used our remote tools to assess site suitability and to optimise efforts, reducing deployment costs and effort. This hardware then fed data to our dashboard in real-time.
This data was combined with weather rain radar, satellite soil moisture and other datasets to provide an advanced overview and insights to various internal teams
Overall FreeUP provided:
- An initial consultation to understand United Utilities specific needs and challenges.
- Pilot deployment from our initial work to us now providing an advance water management system for catchment scale events
- Real-time data provision: as sensors were deployed, real-time data was immediately available, allowing for continuous monitoring of river conditions and deployment progress.
- An intuitive dashboard to provide easy access to data and insights, enabling multiple users to collaborate and make informed decisions.
Features
Reliable data
Hardware and communications that works under all outdoor conditions and remains accurate
No site ground works
Sensing that works out of the box, just lower it into the water body and attach the antenna to a tree, bridge or similar location
In context data
We provide above water data to make our in-water readings far more insightful and valuable by giving them context
Robust deployment
Our hardware can be deployed even during a flooding event without a need for prior physical site inspections
Reduced OPEX
Our sensors clean themselves, minimising the number of needed inspections and so greatly reducing sensing OPEX
Reduced vandalism
Our sensors have no bank box or floating parts making them almost invisible from the bank, reducing public interest & vandalism

Testimonials
We were pleased to see first hand how reliable and easy to deploy FreeUP’s hardware has been. Despite being extremely near to busy public spaces there has been no vandalism due to the sensor’s shape and deployment considerations and the units have performed perfectly through some very challenging environmental conditions. The dashboard has enabled very different teams and data sets to work together and we are now considering FreeUP’s drone offering to help with our SPZ commitments so we’ll have all of our information in one place
